Renew Your Texas DL, CDL, Motorcycle License or ID
You can renew up to two years before or after it expires, except for a CDL that can only be renewed up to one year before it expires. Choose the method that works best for you:
- Online
- By Telephone
- By Mail, or
- In-person at your local driver license office

Online or Telephone Renewal
The most convenient way to renew your Texas driver license, commercial driver license, motorcycle license, or identification card is online or by telephone. You must meet the following requirements:
Driver License Renewal
Eligibility Requirements
- You renewed your license in person last time.
- A Class C, M, or CM driver license or any class CDL without a hazardous material (Hazmat) endorsement. Hazmat endorsed license cannot be renewed online.
- Your license either expires within 2 years or has been expired for less than two years.
- You will be 18 within 30 days and hold a provisional license.
- You are under 79 years of age.
- Your vision, physical, and mental health have not significantly impacted your driving ability since the last renewal.
- You have a valid medical certificate on file (CDL only).
- Your license is valid (not suspended, revoked, canceled, denied, or disqualified) with no outstanding warrants or tickets. To verify your eligibility, visit our License Eligibility page.
- You are a U.S. citizen with a Social Security number on your record.
Identification Card Renewal
Eligibility Requirements
- You renewed your ID in person last time.
- Your ID expires within 2 years or has been expired for less than 2 years.
- You are 18 years of age or older.
- You are a U.S. citizen with a Social Security number on your record.
If you meet the requirements for the card you are trying to renew, you must have the following to complete the renewal process:
- Your most recently issued driver license or identification card and the audit number from the card.
- A printer or email address to receive your temporary driver license and payment receipt. These are not available when renewing by phone.
- A valid credit card (MasterCard, Visa, Discover or American Express).
- The last four digits of your Social Security Number.
Begin the online renewal process, or call 1-866-DL RENEW (1-866-357-3639) to renew by telephone. When you renew online, you will have the opportunity to provide and/or update your emergency contact information.
Mail-in Renewal
If you received an invitation to renew by mail, you can also choose to renew online or by phone. See the section "Online or Telephone Renewals" above. To renew by mail, please follow all the instructions on the form.
In-person at your local driver license office
If you are not eligible to renew online, by phone, or by mail, you will need to visit your local driver license office for assistance. You may visit our License Eligibility page to verify your driver license status. Once you have collected the required documents, you will need to do the following:

- Visit Driver License Services – Appointments to schedule an appointment at your local driver license office.
- Complete the application, available online or at the office.
- Provide the following documentation to the license and permit specialist:
- Completed driver license application form
- Proof of U.S. Citizenship (if not already on your record) or Lawful Presence (if not a U.S. Citizen)
- Proof of Identity
Provisional Driver License
- Visit Driver License Services – Appointments to schedule an appointment at your local driver license office.
- Complete the application, available online or at the office.
- Those under 18 need to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
- Provide the following documentation to the license and permit specialist:
- Completed driver license application
- Proof of U.S. Citizenship (if not already on your record) or Lawful Presence (if not a U.S. Citizen)
- Proof of Identity
